The Process

Understanding exactly what happens from the moment you place your order to the moment the diamond is in your hands.
What materials are used to supplement carbon if needed?

If additional carbon is required, we use compatible high-purity carbon appropriate for diamond growth.

How much ashes or hair do you need?

We typically ask for:

  • 1/2 cup of ashes; or
  • 1 cup of lightly packed hair.

If you have less than that, contact us. A small amount can still go a long way, and we can review what you have before confirming whether it is enough.

Is there enough carbon in ashes, hair, or fur to create a diamond?

Yes. All three sources—ashes, hair, and fur—can contain enough carbon to grow a diamond, but the concentration varies significantly by material type.

Typical carbon content ranges:

Cremated remains (ashes): ~1–4% carbon After cremation, most organic material is burned off, leaving primarily mineral content (calcium, phosphates, etc.) with a small amount of remaining carbon.

  • Even with lower carbon content, only a small amount of purified carbon is needed to grow a diamond. This is why a half cup of ashes or a cup of hair is generally more than sufficient.

Hair (human): ~40–50% carbon
Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a carbon-rich protein, making it a strong and reliable carbon source.

Fur (animal): ~40–50% carbon
Similar to human hair, animal fur is also keratin-based and contains a high percentage of carbon.

Does the amount of ashes determine the size of the diamond?

No, not directly. A small amount of ashes or hair can often provide enough carbon for diamond growth. The final diamond size is determined more by the selected carat weight, growth process, and production requirements than by the amount of ashes submitted.

Can I use hair instead of ashes?

Yes. Hair can be used instead of ashes, or in combination with ashes.

Can I use ashes that have been sitting at home for years?

Yes. Ashes do not expire. Hair can also be used even if it has been kept for many years.

Can I combine ashes from multiple people into one diamond?

Yes, in many cases. Combining ashes can be a meaningful way to honor more than one person in a single diamond. We can discuss this during the order process.

Can I create more than one diamond from the same ashes or hair?

Yes. Because only a small amount of carbon is needed for diamond growth, it may be possible to create multiple diamonds from the same sample. This can be helpful for families who want several pieces made from the same source material.

Can I include non-traditional materials, like flowers, letters, or clothing?

Yes, some meaningful natural materials may be included if they are dry and appropriate for carbon extraction. Examples may include dried flowers, cotton clothing, or handwritten letters.

Can I use dirt or sand to create a diamond?

No. Dirt and sand do not typically provide the right carbon source for diamond growth. If you want to include something connected to a place, dried flowers, grass, or another organic material from that location may be a better option.

Customization Options

Understanding exactly what happens from the moment you place your order to the moment the diamond is in your hands.
What sizes are available?

Diamond Cremation diamonds can be grown in a range of carat sizes 0.25 to 5+ carats. Larger diamonds are more complex to grow and may require additional time.

What colors are available?

Available colors may include colorless, yellow, blue, black, red, green, and other specialty colors.

Some colors are achieved during the growth process, while others may require additional treatment afterward.

How do you make diamonds different colors?

Diamond color depends on trace elements, growth conditions, and post-growth treatment. Blue and yellow tones are commonly associated with specific elements introduced during growth. Other colors may require additional treatment after the fact like irradiation.

Can I choose the cut of my diamond?

Yes, options include round, oval, emerald, cushion, princess, pear, radiant, asscher, and heart. We can help you select a cut that fits your preferred style, jewelry setting, and diamond size.

Can I change my mind about size, color, or cut after the process starts?

We will do our best to accommodate changes, but it depends on where your diamond is in the process. Some choices become fixed once carbon preparation, growth, cutting, or color treatment has begun.

Please contact us as soon as possible if you want to make a change.

Timeline

Understanding exactly what happens from the moment you place your order to the moment the diamond is in your hands.
How long does the process take?

Diamond creation typically takes 4–6 months. Larger diamonds or specialty colors may take longer. Jewlery setting can take up to another few weeks.

Why does the process take months?

Growing a custom diamond requires multiple technical steps: carbon extraction, preparation, diamond growth, quality checks, cutting, polishing, grading, and final delivery or jewelry setting. Each diamond is custom-grown, so timelines vary based on the specifications selected.

What if my diamond takes longer than expected?

If the process takes longer than expected, we will keep you updated. Larger diamonds, specialty colors, or regrowths may require additional time. Our priority is delivering a diamond that meets the agreed quality standards.

Can I turn my pet’s ashes or fur into a diamond?

Yes. We can create a diamond using ashes or fur from a beloved pet.

What is a Living Diamond?

A Living Diamond is a diamond created from hair collected from someone who is still living. It can be used to celebrate a milestone, create a family heirloom, or preserve a meaningful connection during life rather than after loss.

Living Diamonds and memorial diamonds are created through the same general process. The main difference is the source material coming from hair vs ashes.
